SDO Sundog Description:  11/02/2010 - The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) lifts off from Cape Canaveral on a five-year mission to study the sun. The SDO's Atlas V rocket flew past a sundog producing a rippling flurry of shock waves, destroying it. Sundogs are formed by plate-shaped ice crystals in high, cold cirrus clouds.

St. Elmo's Fire Description:  View from the cockpit showing the coronal discharge known as St. Elmo’s fire (actually plasma not fire). The electric field around the object causes ionization of the air molecules, producing a faint glow easily visible in low-light conditions. Approximately 100 - 3000 kV per meter is required to induce the effect; though this number is greatly dependent on the geometry of the object in question. Shuttle Timelapse Description:  Segment 1: NASA's Shuttle Discovery (STS131), while docked to the ISS, captured these images on 12/04/ 10 as it moved from the night side of the Earth to the daytime. In the process the Aurora Borealis can be seen.
Segment 2: STS131 docked to the ISS, on April 16/04/10. The Shuttle emerges from darkness over the Canadian Rockies, traversing the US southeast towards Florida. The Bahamas and Hispaniola are seen as the Shuttle continues over Venezuela, Brazil and finally the southern Atlantic ocean before returning to darkness.
Segment 3: The Sun rises behind Atlantis in this sequence from 19/06/11, one of the last days of the historic final mission of the shuttle program.
