    Description:
    First flown on 06/05/1941, the P-47 was designed as a high-performance fighter/bomber. In the entire history of military aviation, there has never been an airplane that could match the P-47 for ruggedness and dependability.       Sukhoi T-4 Sotka  Popular
    Description:
    The T-4 "Sotka" was an experimental supersonic aircraft which first flew in 1972 eight years after the United States' XB-70 Valkyrie. The T-4 was made largely from titanium and stainless steel, and featured possibly the first fly-by-wire control system. It had a lowerable nose section, similar to Concorde, to provide better visibility from the flight deck during takeoff and landing. With the nose raised, a periscope was used for forward vision. It was designed to fly at Mach 3, but is believed to have reached Mach 1.4.

      The B-17 Flying Fortress 
    Description:
    The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a 4-engine American bomber, primarily employed in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. In the Pacific, the planes earned a deadly reputation with the Japanese, who dubbed them "four-engine fighters." The Fortresses were also legendary for their ability to stay in the air after taking a brutal pounding. They sometimes limped back to their bases with large chunks of the fuselage shot off.

      P-47 Thunderbolt 
    Description: Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug" was the largest single-engined fighter of its day. It was one of the main USAAF fighters of WWII, and also served with other Allied air forces. The P-47 was effective in air combat but proved especially adept at ground attack. It had eight .50-caliber machine guns, four per wing. When fully loaded the P-47 could weigh up to eight tons.

The final scenes at the Vintage Flying Museum at Meacham Field in Fort Worth, Texas, show the last airworthy A-26A, "Special K," now owned and being restored by the Pacific Prowler organization chaired by Jim Terry.

      XFY Pogo 
    Description:
    The Convair XFY Pogo tailsitter was an experimental VTOL aircraft developed during the 1950's. It had delta wings and three-bladed contra-rotating propellers powered by a 5,500 hp Allison YT40-A-16 turboprop engine. It was intended to be a high-performance fighter aircraft capable of operating from small warships. Landing the XFY-1 was difficult as the pilot had to look over his shoulder while carefully working the throttle to land.
