      Convair B-58 Hustler  Popular
The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational jet bomber capable of Mach 2 supersonic flight. Developed for the USAF for service with SAC during the late 1950s. Intended to fly at high altitudes and speeds to avoid Soviet fighters, the introduction of the surface-to-air missile forced the B-58 into a low-level penetration role that severely limited its strategic value. The B-58 featured many technical innovations including; sophisticated inertial guidance navigation and bombing systems, heat-resistant honeycomb sandwich skin panels in the wings and fuselage. Individual clam-sell ejection pods and an external droppable two-component pod beneath the fuselage containing extra fuel and a nuclear weapon. Music: TÚlÚpopmusik - 'Breathe'.

      The XB-70 Valkyrie  Popular
The XB-70 Valkyrie was a nuclear-armed bomber designed for the USAF's SAC in the 1950s. A 6-engined aircraft able to fly at Mach 3 at high altitudes (74,000 ft), which would have allowed it to avoid defending interceptors, the only effective anti-bomber weapon at that time. The cost of the aircraft ($1.5Bn USD), the development of ICBMs and the first effective anti-aircraft missiles led to the cancellation of the program in 1961. More info.       The P-51 Mustang  Popular
The P-51 Mustang was a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft that served with the Allied air forces during WW2. It flew mostly as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, ensuring air superiority from early 1944. The Mustang also served during the Korean War as a fighter, then in a ground attack role. The definitive version of the fighter was powered by the Packard V-1650-3, a two-stage two-speed supercharged 12-cylinder version of the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and armed with six .50 caliber Browning machine guns. It is in my opinion the most aesthetically pleasing of all the WW2 fighters. Music: Raidiohead - 'Weird Fishes'.

      The B-2 Spirit  Popular
The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is a multi-role stealth heavy bomber. The B-2's composite materials, special coatings and flying-wing design all contribute to its "stealthiness." One of the most expensive planes ever built: estimates for the costs per plane range from 1.1 to 2.2 billion USD. Music: Massive Attack - Future Proof'.

      A-10 Thunderbolt II  Popular
The A-10 was designed for high-survivability with a titanium cover surrounding both the cockpit, ammunition and fuel tank. Placement of the engines decreases the infrared signature lowering it's vulnerablity to heatseeking missiles and ground fire. Music: Supergrass - 'Tales of Endurance'.

      SR-71 Blackbird  Popular
Description: The SR-71 remains the world's fastest and highest-flying production aircraft, capable of Mach 3+ at altitudes of over 85,000 feet. In flight the titanium skin is heated to 500░C and expands by 15cm. The fuselage has longtitudinal creases to absorb this heat expansion but unsealed tanks leak fuel while on the ground. The Pratt & Whitney J-58 enigines start flight as turbojets, then become ramjets above Mach 1.6, requiring a steep dive due to anaemic low speed peformance. The SR-71's JP-7 fuel is used as a coolant and lubricant during flight, and contains caesium to mask the radar signature of the exhaust plume. Music: Trentemoller - Take Me Into Your Skin

      SR-71 Blackbird  Popular
Developed for the CIA as a reconnaissance aircraft more than 40 years ago, SR-71s are still the world's fastest and highest-flying production aircraft. The aircraft can fly more than 2200 mph (Mach 3+ or more than three times the speed of sound) and at altitudes of over 85,000 feet. As research platforms, the aircraft can cruise at Mach 3 for more than one hour. Additional facts and information. Music: Bladerunner Soundtrack - 'Rachel's Song'. Large File
